대구성악콩쿠르 국제경연으로위상높인다

대구성악콩쿠르가 올해부터 국제경연으로 위상을 높인다.

(사)한국음악협회 대구광역시지회(이하 대구음악협회)는 "한국 신진 성악가들의 등용문인 대구성악콩쿠르를 올해 40회 대회부터 '대구국제성악콩쿠르'란 이름의 국제 경연으로 격상해 치른다"고 14일 밝혔다.

이를 위해 대구음악협회는 지난 8일과 9일(현지시간) 이탈리아 밀라노 베르디국립음악원 푸치니홀에서 유럽 예선을 치렀다. 이탈리아‧영국‧독일을 비롯한 유럽의 젊은 성악가들과 한국‧중국인 유학생 등 40여 명이 참가해 열띤 경연을 벌였다. 그 결과 6명이 본선 진출에 성공했다.

대구콩쿠르는 올해 40주년을 맞는 유서깊은 대회다. 1회 대상 수상자인 고성현 한양대 교수를 시작으로 다수의 입상자가 국내 유수의 대학교수로 후학을 양성하며 국내외에서 활발히 활동하고 있다. 특히 2020년 38회 대회에서 대상을 받은 김효영은 지난해 세계 최고 권위의 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 콩쿠르에서 우승을 차지하기도 했다.

대구음악콩쿠르를 국제경연으로 위상을 높이려는 대구음악협회의 본격적인 시도는 2019년 시작됐다. 사전 준비 작업으로 유럽 쪽 참가자 확보를 위해 이탈리아 베르디 국립음악원 측과 현지에서 예선을 치르는 방안까지 논의되던 중이었다. 협의를 위해 2020년 3월 출국을 며칠 앞뒀지만, 코로나19로 인해 결국 무산됐다.

예선에 앞서 6일 밀라노 시청에서 열린 간담회에서 토마소 사키(Tommaso Sacchi) 밀라노 문화부시장은 "자매도시인 밀라노와 대구는 제도적‧문화적으로 많이 닮아있다. 이번 콩쿠르가 전 세계 재능있는 성악인 발굴과 그들의 미래를 위한 기회가 되길 바란다"고 응원했다.

방성택 대구음악협회 회장은 14일 기자와의 전화 통화에서 "예선을 앞두고 이탈리아에 코로나19가 다시 확산해 사전 신청자가 불참하는 등 참가 인원이 예상보다 적어 아쉽다"면서도 "이번 유럽예선은 세계 콩쿠르 연맹 인준을 위한 첫걸음이란 점에서 의미가 크다"고 말했다.

한국 예선은 다음달 5, 6일 달서아트센터에서 열린다. 이어 다음달 21일 대구콘서트하우스 그랜드홀에서 제40회 대구국제성악콩쿠르 본선 경연이 펼쳐질 예정이다.

대상 수상자에겐 문화체육부장관상이 수여된다. '콩쿠르 수상자 음악회' 참가 자격과 대구오페라하우스가 제작하는 주‧조역으로 데뷔하는 특전도 주어진다.

The Daegu Sungak Competition will raise its status as an international competition from this year.

The Daegu Metropolitan Branch of the Korea Music Association (hereinafter referred to as the Daegu Music Association) announced on the 14th that "the Daegu Sungak Competition, the gateway to emerging Korean vocalists, will be upgraded to an international competition named the Daegu International Sungak Competition."

To this end, the Daegu Music Association held a European preliminary round at the Puccini Hall of the Verdi National Conservatory of Music in Milan, Italy, on the 8th and 9th (local time). More than 40 young European vocalists, including Italy, Britain, and Germany, and Korean and Chinese students participated in the heated competition. As a result, six players succeeded in advancing to the finals.

The Daegu Competition is a historic competition that marks its 40th anniversary this year. Starting with Professor Ko Sung-hyun of Hanyang University, a first-time grand prize winner, a number of winners are actively working at home and abroad, training their juniors as leading university professors in Korea. In particular, Kim Hyo-young, who won the grand prize at the 38th competition in 2020, won the world's most prestigious New York Metropolitan Competition last year.

The Daegu Music Association's full-fledged attempt to raise the status of the Daegu Music Competition as an international competition began in 2019. In order to secure European participants as a preparatory work, the preliminary round was being discussed with the Italian Verdi National Conservatory. A few days before leaving the country in March 2020 for consultation, but it was eventually canceled due to COVID-19.

At a meeting held at Milan City Hall on the 6th before the preliminary round, Milan's Deputy Mayor of Culture, Tomaso Sacchi, said, "Milano and Daegu, sister cities, are very institutional and cultural similar." I hope this competition will be an opportunity to discover talented vocalists around the world and for their future," he said.

Bang Sung-taek, chairman of the Daegu Music Association, said in a telephone interview with a reporter on the 14th, "It is regrettable that the number of participants is smaller than expected, with COVID-19 spreading again in Italy ahead of the preliminary round."

The Korean preliminary round will be held at the Dalseo Art Center on the 5th and 6th of next month. The 40th Daegu International Music Competition finals will then be held at the Grand Hall of the Daegu Concert House on the 21st of next month.

The Grand Prize winner will be awarded the Minister of Culture and Sports Award. He will also be eligible to participate in the "Concert Winners' Concert" and will be given the privilege of debuting as a principal and assistant produced by Daegu Opera House.
