방성택 신임 대구음악협회장 “대구성악콩쿠르를 국제대회로”

“임기 내 반드시 추진…대구 음악인에 동기부여”

"대구성악콩쿠르와 대구음악제를 국제행사로 만들겠습니다."

지난달 29일 취임해 4년의 임기를 시작한 방성택 신임 대구음악협회장의 목표다.

방 회장은 "쉬운 일이 아니란 걸 잘 알지만 '유네스코 음악창의도시 대구'의 위상을 높이고 지역 음악계가 발전할 수 있는 길이라고 믿기에 임기 내 반드시 추진하겠다. 이렇게만 된다면 협회의 위상 또한 더욱 높아질 수 있다"고 말했다.

대구콩쿠르를 국제경연으로 위상을 높여 한국을 대표하는 성악콩쿠르로 발전시키려는 대구음악협회의 움직임은 2019년쯤으로 거슬러 올라간다. 방 회장은 당시 협회 부회장으로 활동했다.

이즈음 서울의 한 에이전시로부터 행사를 후원하겠다는 제안도 받았다. 사전 준비 작업으로 유럽 쪽 참가자 확보를 위해 이탈리아 베르디 국립음악원 측과 현지에서 예선을 치르는 방안까지 논의되던 중이었다. 협의를 위해 2020년 3월 출국을 며칠 앞뒀지만, 코로나19로 인해 결국 무산됐다.

대구콩쿠르는 올해 40주년을 맞는 유서깊은 대회다. 1회 대상 수상자인 고성현 한양대 교수를 시작으로 다수의 입상자가 국내 유수의 대학교수로 후학을 양성하며 국내외에서 활발히 활동하고 있다. 특히 2020년 38회 대회에서 대상을 받은 김효영은 지난해 세계 최고 권위의 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 콩쿠르에서 우승을 차지하기도 했다.

반면 현재 대구권 대학 학생들의 의욕은 많이 떨어진 분위기다. 본선 진출자 대다수가 서울‧수도권 대학 출신일 정도다.

"향후 대구 음악계를 이끌어갈 이들의 동기부여를 위해서라도 대구콩쿠르의 위상을 높일 필요가 있다고 봅니다."


이를 위해 협회는 대구콩쿠르를 국제대회로 격상해 우승자에게 군 면제 혜택을 주는 방안을 추진한다. 대구오페라하우스와 협력해 입상자들이 오페라하우스가 제작하는 작품에 캐스팅될 수 있도록 돕고, 대구콘서트하우스와도 협력해 수상자 음악회를 공동으로 여는 등 입상자 특전을 강화해 실력있는 신진성악가의 프로 데뷔를 지원할 계획이다.

"국제경연 무대가 되면 참가자뿐만 아니라 해외 에이전시 측 관계자의 방문도 이어집니다. 입상자들과 계약을 하기 위해서죠. 지역 음악인의 해외 진출 교두보가 될 수 있습니다."

협회는 또 매년 9월 열리는 대구음악제도 국제행사로 만들 계획이다. '클래식 종주국 유럽'을 비롯한 해외 여러 나라에 한국 클래식 음악의 위상을 알리겠다는 의미다.

"'현존 최고 피아니스트'로 불리며 까다롭기로 유명한 크리스티안 짐머만이 25일부터 한국에서 리사이틀을 갖는 것도 (국민들의 음악적 소양을 포함한) 한국 클래식의 위상이 높아졌기에 가능한 일입니다. 협회의 이런 활동이 지역 음악인의 활동영역을 넓히고 지역 음악계에 활력을 불어넣는 길이 아닐까 합니다."

The Daegu Music Association's move to develop the Daegu Competition into a representative vocal competition in Korea by enhancing its status as an international competition dates back to around 2019. Chairman Bang served as vice president of the association at the time.

Around this time, an agency in Seoul also offered to sponsor the event. In order to secure European participants as a preparatory work, the preliminary round was being discussed with the Italian Verdi National Conservatory. A few days before leaving the country in March 2020 for consultation, but it was eventually canceled due to COVID-19.

The Daegu Competition is a historic competition that marks its 40th anniversary this year. Starting with Professor Ko Sung-hyun of Hanyang University, a first-time grand prize winner, a number of winners are actively working at home and abroad, training their juniors as leading university professors in Korea. In particular, Kim Hyo-young, who won the grand prize at the 38th competition in 2020, won the world's most prestigious New York Metropolitan Competition last year.

On the other hand, the motivation of university students in Daegu seems to have decreased a lot. Most of the finalists are from universities in Seoul and the metropolitan area.

"I think it is necessary to raise the status of the Daegu Competition to motivate those who will lead the Daegu music industry in the future."


To this end, the association will upgrade the Daegu Competition to an international competition to provide military exemptions to the winners. In cooperation with Daegu Opera House, it plans to help the winners be cast in works produced by the opera house, and in cooperation with the Daegu Concert House, it plans to strengthen the perks of the winners to support the professional debut of talented new vocal musicians.

"When the international competition stage is held, not only participants but also officials from overseas agencies will visit. To sign a contract with the winners. It can be a bridgehead for local musicians to go abroad."

The association also plans to make the Daegu Music Festival an international event held every September. This means that it will promote the status of Korean classical music to many foreign countries, including "Europe, the birthplace of classical music."

"Christian Zimmermann, who is called the 'best pianist in the world' and is known for his difficulty, will hold a recital in Korea from the 25th because the status of Korean classical music (including the musical literacy of the people) has increased." I think these activities of the association will expand the scope of local musicians' activities and revitalize the local music industry."
